Doesn't my attorney have a legal right to return my calls or emails?

I last met with my attorney concerning my civil case 6 months ago. I have been calling him every once in a while for the past three months to see if he has any new updates. He never returns my calls or e-mails to even give me an update or even just to say nothing has changed. I don't understand what the point is of even having a lawyer. i don't know what to do. I am left absolutely in the dark these last 6 months. Is this right or professional?? What should I do???
